Wilbur Wood is a former American professional baseball athlete who hailed from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wood who has batted with his right and threw with his left has pitched for a few teams in the Major League Baseball. He graduated from Belmont High School where he was drafted out by the Boston Red Sox in 1960 as amateur free agent. Wood made his major league debut the following year on June 30, 1961. Wood spent four seasons with the Red Sox, pitching on and off season before he was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 6, 1964 where he played until the following 1965 seasons. After the 1966 season, Wood was traded to the Chicago White Sox on October 12, 1966. Wood had most of his career with the Cubs, playing for twelve seasons. It was also during his career with the Cubs that Wood's best came out, being selected in the All-Star Games for three times and being named 1972 AL TSN Pitcher of the Year. Wood was seriously injured during their match in Tiger Stadium against the Detroit Tigers , May 1976, when Ron LeFlore hit a vicious line drive causing the ball to struck Wood's left knee that shattered his kneecap.
