Walt Hazzard, also known as Mahdi Abdul-Raman after he converted to Islam while playing professionally, is a retired professional basketball player and coach. He became famous after playing for the University of California, Los Angeles basketball team. Hazzard went to Overbrook High School in Philadelphia before proceeding to UCLA. During his first season in college, Hazzard helped the team get to the Final Four of the NCAA Men's Division I however they were routed by the Cincinnati Bearcats. The UCLA team was able to pick up the NCAA championship title in the succeeding season and Hazzard was chosen as the tournament MVP by the AP. He was also named as an All-American and College Player of the Year for the 1963 season. In 1964, Hazzard was able to play for the U.S. Basketball Team in the Olympics and helped bring home the gold medal. Hazzard went on to play in the NBA, first for the Los Angeles Lakers. He stayed for four seasons with Lakers before moving on to play for the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. During that season, he had a 24 ppg and 6.2 apg average and was named into the All-Star Game for that year. Hazzard played for the Atlanta Hawks, the Buffalo Braves and then the Golden State Warriors before going back to Seattle in 1973 before announcing his retirement.
