Von Hayes is a retired professional baseball player in the MLB. He was an outfielder for the Cleveland Indians, the Philadelphia Phillies and the California Angels. Hayes was born in Stockton, California and went to Saint Mary's College of California. Hayes was drafted during the seventh round of the 1979 amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians. While playing for the Indians, Hayes finished seventh for the Rookie of the Year voting during the 1982 season. After playing for two seasons in the MLB for the Indians, Hayes was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for five players which later became known as the “five-for-one” trade. Hayes was able to cement his position as an outfielder while playing for the Phillies. He finished eighth during the 1986 MVP voting. He was chosen as an All-Star during the 1989 season. During an October 1985 game, Hayes was able to hit two homers in just one inning setting a new MLB history. He was able to help the Phillies win that game against the Pirates with a 15-11 score. Following an injury that he sustained after he got hit by a pitch, Hayes announced his retirement after a season with the California Angels in 1992.
