Illinois-native Tony Granato is a retired professional hockey player and is an assistant coach in the National Hockey League. He appeared in the league as a player from 1988 to 2001 and as a coach ever since 2002. Before making it big in the NHL, Granato went to the University of Wisconsin—Madison where he played college hockey. Granato became eligible to join the 1982 NHL Entry Draft and was signed by the New York Rangers. During his first season in the NHL, Granato was able to come up with 63 points and 13 goals. In that year's playoffs, he was able to come with 2 points and made a goal. After his splendid performance, he was named into the 1988 NHL All-Rookie Team. In 1989, Granato signed with the Los Angeles Kings. His best season was in 1992 after he came up with 82 points and made 37 goals. During the 1996 season, Granato was named to his first All-Star Game. He also received the NHL Bill Masterton Trophy for that year as well. The last team that Granato played for was the San Jose Sharks. After appearing in the 2000 season for the Sharks, he announced his retirement. He joined the Colorado Avalanche's coaching staff in 2002 and was made head coach within that year. Granato is currently the assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
