Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Scott Gomez is a professional hockey player in the National Hockey League. He is of Mexican and Colombian descent and is currently in the active roster of the Montreal Canadiens. He was able to make the leap to professional hockey after he was selected by the New Jersey Devils during the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Gomez made history by being the first Latino in the NHL. He was assigned to play in the Western Hockey League for the Tri-City Americans. He was called up to the Devils in 1999 after he came up with 108 points after appearing in 58 games. Gomez was able to come up with 70 points for the Devils during his first season in the league and was awarded the Calder Trophy and was named into the NHL All-Star Game. During the 2000 NHL playoffs, Gomez was able to score 10 points that helped the team to take home their second Stanley Cup. He was able to play again for the Stanley Cup in the succeeding year but the Devils were routed by the Colorado Avalanche. Gomez won his second Stanley Cup with the Devils during the 2002 season. Gomez signed with the New York Rangers in 2007 and helped the team win the Victoria Cup in 2008. He was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2009.
