He was born on December 25, 1982 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico and is the nephew of the late baseball player Julio Gotay. He began playing for the major league on August 3, 2004 for the Kansas City Royals. He played a total of 44 games for his first major league team in 2004 and recorded a batting average of .270 and a home run. In the next season, he played 86 games and made a .227 batting average with 29 runs batted in and five home runs. He played for minor league in 2006.
