Robin Roberts is a former American professional baseball player. He was born in Springfield, Illinois, and is a son of an immigrant Welsh coal miner. Roberts took his college education at Michigan State University, where he had attended an Army Air Corps training program. Roberts was a Major League Baseball starting pitcher who primarily pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies , where he played from 1948 to 1961. Roberts also played for a few other teams in the major leagues, including: the Baltimore Orioles from 1962 to 1965, Houston Astros from 1965 to 1966 and Chicago Cubs in 1966. Roberts started his professional baseball career when he signed as amateur free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies before the 1948 season. He was listed at 6 ft. and 190 lbs. Posed as pitcher, Roberts threw with his right and batted with his both hands. Roberts made his professional debut with the Phillies on June 18, 1948. On October 16, 1961 Roberts was purchased from the Philadelphia Phillies by the New York Yankees. Roberts signed as free agent for Baltimore Orioles in 1962 and for Houston Astros in 1965. And in July 13, 1966 Roberts joined the Chicago Cubs . Roberts' final game was with the Chicago Cubs on September 3, 1966. In his nineteen-season career, Roberts compiled a 286–245 record with 2,357 strikeouts, a 3.41 earned-run average, 305 complete games, 45 shutouts, and 4,688? innings and pitched in 676 games. Roberts was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976. He passed away on May 6, 2010 in Temple Terrace, Florida.
