Pernell Whitaker is a former American professional lightweight boxer who hails from Norfolk, Virginia. Whitaker is a silver medalist at the 1982 World Championships; it was then followed by the gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games and another gold medal in the 1984 Olympics. Prior to his pro career, Whitaker spent extensive time in the amateur division starting at an early age of nine. And upon turning professional, in his eleventh pro match-up on December 1986, Whitaker defeated Alfredo Layne. He repeated the same feat when he defeated Roger Mayweather on March 28, 1987. A year after his Mayweather fight, on March 12, 1988, Whitaker challenged José Luis Ramírez for the WBC Lightweight Championship in Levallois, France. Whitaker however, suffered his first pro defeat via split decision in Ramirez's favor. The following year, on February 1989, Whitaker won a decision over Greg Haugen for the IBF lightweight title. Whitaker was gaining momentum as the pound for pound best boxer in the world as he met in the ring with Julio Cesar Chaves on September 1993 with their match ending in a draw. On April 1997 He fought Oscar De La Hoya and despite receiving an official knockdown, De La Hoya won the match via unanimous decision. Whitaker's last fight came on April 27, 2001, in a match against Carlos Bojorquez. Whitaker broke his clavicle in the fourth round forcing his retirement. To date, Whitaker had fought over 46 fights winning 40 of them with 17 coming by way of knockout, having 4 loses and 1 drawn.
