Paul Waner Autographs

Paul Glee Waner was nicknamed the “Big Poison”, and was brother to Lloyd, the “Little Poison”. Waner was a half German-half American professional baseball who mostly played for the Pittsburgh Pirates . His hometown was in harrah, Oklahoma and he was born on April 16, 1903. He was left- handed. From 1926 to 1945, Waner led the National League in batting three times and became the Most Valuable Player in the NL in 1927. He was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1952. Waner was also one of the two players who hold the record for consecutive games with an extra- base hit. The other player was Chipper Jones . He spent fifteen years playing for the Pirates before he went to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1941 and from 1943- 1944. He also spent some time playing for the Boston Braves in 1941 to 1942, and the New York Yankees from 1944 to 1945. He was well known for being able to hit while having a hang over. Casey Stengel once complimented Waner by saying that Waner must have been very graceful to slide without breaking the bottle on his hip. Upon Pirates' management request, Waner stopped drinking in 1938. That year, he failed to live up to his hitting average. His nearsightedness was discovered by his team late in his career. However, the glasses given to him only became a hindrance to his hitting. At the age of 62, Waner died in Sarasota, Florida. By 1999, he finished 62nd on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players of all time. He was also nominated to be a part of MLB's All- Century Team.
