Otto Velez, nicknamed “The Swatto,” was a former Puerto Rican professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball. He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Throughout his entire professional baseball career from 1973 to 1983, Velez played as an outfielder for a few teams in the major leagues; the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and the Cleveland Indians . He was listed at 6 ft. and 170 lbs. He batted and threw right handed. Velez started his career in professional baseball after signing as amateur free agent with the New York Yankees in 1969. He made his professional debut on September 4, 1973 with the Yankees. After his three years following his debut, on November 5, 1976 Velez was drafted from the Yankees by the Toronto Blue Jays as their fifty third pick during the 1976 expansion draft. Velez' major career highlight with the Blue Jays was on May 4, 1980 after hitting three home runs against the Cleveland Indians. On February 7, 1983, he joined the Cleveland Indians as free agent. Velez' final game was with the Indians on August 7, 1983.
