Born in August 15, 1981, Óliver Pérez, No. 46 in the New York Mets is a left-handed Mexican Major League Baseball relief pitcher. He played for the San Diego Padres from 2002–2003, the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2003–2006, and the New York Mets from 2006 to the present. His career began in 1999 when San Diego Padres signed him as an amateur free agent. Three years later, Perez made his debut and made well as a rookie. His career regressed in 2003 but picked up again in 2004 where his pitching mechanics with an average of 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings became the highest in the Majors. In 2005, Perez' performance dipped again. He broke his toe after he kicked when they lost a game to St. Louis so that the Pirates were left with no choice but to place him on the disabled list. Perez lost some of his speed off fastball. In the inaugural World Baseball Classic, Perez represented Mexico but Mexico was eliminated in the second group stage. In 2006, the Met's major league recalled Perez on its roster. By the following year, he emerged as one of the most consistent pitchers of Met's, finishing the season with 10-15 and an ERA of 3.56. He was paid $6.5 million in 2008 by the New York Mets after he won an arbitration case.
