He was born in Bamberg, South Carolina and took his college education when he attended the University of South Carolina . Wilson, both batted and threw with his right, began his career in pro baseball after he was drafted in the second round during the 1977 amateur draft by the New York Mets. Wilson made his pro debut on September 2, 1980. Throughout his entire twelve season career, Wilson had participated in over 1403 games, averaging .274 hit with sixty seven home runs, 438 RBIs, with over 327 stolen bases. He had his final game on October 6, 1991. Wilson's career highlights in the major leagues was being part of the Mets' winning team during the 1986 World Series championship and becoming inducted in the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1996. After his retirement, Wilson served in the management staff of the Kingsport Mets and was a coach for the New York Mets from 1997 to 2002. Wilson also managed the single A team Brooklyn Cyclones in 2005.
