Mike Rathje is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was born in Mannville, Alberta. Rathje started his professional career in ice hockey when he was drafted in the National Hockey League by the San Jose Sharks during the 1992 NHL Entry Draft held on June 20, 1992. He was the 1st round and 3rd overall pick of the team. He was listed at 6 ft. 5 in. and 235 lbs. Rathje posed as a defenceman, whose primary task is to prevent the rival team from scoring. Rathje made his debut in the NHL during the 1993–94 seasons. Rathje, holding-out for nearly half of the 2001–02 seasons, responded in the 2002–03 seasons as he played with a career year in all 82 games scoring a career high with 7 goals and 22 assists for 29 points. Following Rathje's first eleven seasons with the Sharks, he signed a five-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers after the NHL lockout, which was a stoppage that resulted in the cancellation of what would have been the 88th season of the National Hockey League, according to sources. Rathje was placed on Long Term Injured Reserve shortly in his second season with the Flyers due to chronic problems with his hip and back. Rathje attempted to come back to the Flyers lineup before the 2007–08 seasons, but was placed on Long Term Injured Reserve after training camp.
