Played as a starting goalie for the Leafs from the 1976 to 1980, he spent more than two long years playing for the starting task for the team. According to sources, Palmateer was long been playing for the Leafs organization even before he made it to the National Hockey League. He also played a few seasons in the International Hockey League in which he played for the Saginaw Gears. He stayed for a couple of years in the minors where he continued to harness his goaling skills. After his membership in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, he moved to play for the Washington Capitals. His initial seasons with the team was not that impressive, as he was affected by a few injuries he had like an ankle ligament damage.
