Nicholas Joseph “Mickey” Witek was a former Major League Baseball infielder. He was from Luzerne, Pennsylvania and was born on December 19, 1915. He played as a second baseman, short stop, and a third baseman. He threw and batted right- handed. Witek began his professional career playing for the New York Giants of the National League. His first game with them was on April 16, 1940. For the entirety of his pro baseball career, he played for 9 seasons for just 2 teams; the New York Giants and the then American League's New York Yankees. In 1943, he was named as the Most Valuable Player of the National League. He was an excellent player, recording a .277 batting average and a .347 slugging average in a total of 581 games played. His last game was May 1, 1949 for the Yankees against the Boston Red Sox . Witek died on August 24, 1990 at the age of 74. He is buried at the St. John Cemetery in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
