Mickey Vernon Autographs

James Barton Vernon, also known as Mickey Vernon, was a first baseman in the Major League Baseball. He was born on April 22, 1918 in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. He went to Villanova University before he went to the major league on July 8, 1939. According to sports experts, his best season can either be in 1946 or in 1953.In 1946, he had an awesome batting average with the Senators where he became the leader for the league. His power- hitting ability was not there yet, though. In 1953, he picked up a number of career highs. He led the league again that time in the batting average and his statistics showed great improvements. It can be said, however, that during the 1940's and most of the 1950's Vernon showed great numbers. Vernon was also well known for his unique personality and charismatic but shy and quiet style. He became one of the well- liked ballplayers and became the oldest player by almost a year, playing at 42 years old. He became coach to the Pirates in 1960. On September 1, he made his last appearance as a player. Vernon worked with several teams as a coach or manager, like what he did with the Senators in 1961. He also became a batting instructor for the Yankees before finally retiring from baseball. In his final years, he lived in Pennsylvania before succumbing to a stroke on September 24, 2008. As a tribute, Vernon was given the recognition as one of the ten former players who began their careers before 1943 to be considered by the Veterans Committee for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009. All in all, he left a very astounding baseball record despite missing 2 seasons because of World War II.
