Michelle Wie (Wie seong-mi as her Korean name) was born October 11, 1989 in Honolulu, Hawaii. A professional golfer, she started playing golf at the age of 10 in which she became the youngest player to qualify for the USGA amateur championship. Wie was the youngest player to win the US Women's Amateur to make it to LPGA tour event. Michelle attended Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii and graduated in the year 2007. She announced that she will continue her studies in Stanford University in December 19, 2006. She enrolled in September 2007 as a freshman and a professional golfer. Under NCAA rules, Wie is enlisted and not eligible to play for Stanford's Golf team. She took leaves of absence the rest of the year to play golf. Her amateur career started in the year 2000-2005. Wie won the Hawaii State Stroke Play Championship and the Jennie K. Wilson Women's Invitational in 2001. The next year she won the Hawaii State Open Women's Division. At the Kraft Nabisco Championship held in 2003, Wie became the youngest player to make LPGA cut and a record for women's major championship. She turned professional golfer on October 5, 2005 just a week before her 16th birthday sponsored by SONY and NIKE. Wie played her first professional tournament in the 2005 Samsung World Championship. In February 2006, Michelle was placed third behind Annika Sörenstam and Paula Creamer. In May 2006 saw her play theAsian Tour SK Telecom Open and she became the 1st female medalist in a local qualifier in the Men's U.S. Open.
