Michael Williams, nicknamed “Mercury,” is a former American heavyweight boxer who hailed from Houston, Texas. He was born on June 16, 1962 Lafayette, Louisiana. Standing 6 ft. 4 in. and weighs 322 lbs. with a reach of 83 in., Williams turned pro in 1984 and was considered by many sports analyst as a rising prospect following his thirteen straight victory his first thirteen fights that includes a victory over fellow heavyweight contender James “Quick” Tillis. In 1997, Williams fought then former heavyweight champion “Terrible” Tim Witherspoon who also fought and defeated Tillis. Williams lost the match via split decision. In the following year, Williams lost to James Buster Douglas by Technical Knock Out. And during the 90s, Williams suffered several losses to other noteworthy heavyweight contenders such as Alex Garcia and Corrie Sanders before he retired in 2000 following a loss to Lawrence Clay Bey via Technical Knock Out. Throughout his pro boxing career, Williams fought 28 fights and emerged victorious in 22 of them with 14 of it came by way of knockouts, and 6 loses. Apart from his pro boxing career, Williams also had cameo appearances in several films which include Rocky 5 where he portrayed fictional heavyweight champion of the world Union Cane. Some of his filmography would include A Soldier's Story in 1984 and Platoon in 1987.
