Also known as “Leapin' Louie”, Lou Fontinato is considered as one of the toughest and most aggressive defensemen in the history of the New York Rangers and the entire NHL. Fontinato became active during the 1950's to the 1960's. This Canadian hockey player earned a minimum of 100 minutes in the penalty box for each of the six seasons that he played professionally. In a book published in 2009 entitled “100 Ranger Greats”, Fontinato was ranked 95th in the entire list together with Russ Cohen, John Halligan, and Adam Raider. Fontinato found his way to the Montreal Canadiens after he was traded by the Rangers in 1961. During his first season with the Canadiens, he had gotten 167 minutes in the penalty box, more than any other player during the 1961-62 NHL season. During the 1962-63 season, he was able to garner 141 penalty minutes. Fontinato's career was abruptly ended after he suffered a temporary paralysis due to a broken vertebra that he sustained after a March 1963 game against the Rangers. Although he has recovered from the paralysis, the strain of the game forced him to take on a less physically demanding career.
