Lance Parrish is a retired Major League Baseball player who came from Pennsylvania. Nicknamed “Big Wheel”, he entered the Major League Baseball in 1974 as a first-round pick of the Detroit Tigers. However, he did not immediately appeared in the league after the draft and instead played for the Lakeland Tigers in the minor leagues. He started his Major League Appearance on September 5, 1977 for the Tigers but played part time only. He finally had the slot for full time play in 1979 after the teams' catcher, Milt May, left the team. That year, he also appeared in a few winter baseball games for the Puerto Rico based team, Mayaguez Indians. The 1980 season proved to be a great one for Parrish as he was included for the first time in the All-Star team of the American League. That year also, he bagged a Silver Slugger Award which is his first for his entire career. According to reviews, the 1982 season was his best in terms of offense evidenced by 32 home runs he was able to make and his second Silver Slugger Award. He continued to improve for the following season and was given Silver Slugger recognition and a Gold Glove Award. After his ten-year stint with the Detroit Tigers, he became part of the Philadelphia Phillies where he continued to showcase his skills and then joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in a training camp. His career ended with a record of 1, 988 games and had .252 hitting average, with 1, 782 hits in all.
