Born on August 27, 1989 in Anaheim, California, Vitters is a highly coveted player currently playing for the Cubs' class AA affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies. He was drafted by the Cubs third overall in the 2007 amateur draft. He formally signed with the Cubs on August 15, 2007. Vitters is known for his stellar batting ability and excellent hand- eye coordination. He is also famous for his fast wrists and fluid swing, which many baseball pros admit are some of the most difficult things to teach a young hitter. Though at times he tends to chase bad pitches, Vitters still amazes everyone with how he handles any type of pitch like a pro. Although most scouts are overwhelmed by his great batting prowess, his defensive shortcomings cannot be discounted as well. He could be moved around the diamond because of his offensive skills and has developed good footwork over at the hot corner and fairly good hands. However, according to some reviews, Vitters has problems with his glove work at times and tends to boot the ball even on some rather routine plays at times. Overall, the Cubs are bound to work some things out to include him in their lineup, what with both the third and first being filled already by Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee, respectively.
