John Hicks is a retired professional football player in the National Football League. Hicks served as an offensive linesman while playing in the NFL. He finished 2nd in the Heisman Trophy voting and is the last linesman to get so close to getting the trophy. Hicks was born in Cleveland, Ohio and played in the NFL from 1974 all the way to 1977 for the New York Giants. Hicks decided to attend Ohio State where he became the starting tackle during his freshman year. However, he had to redshirt his sophomore year but was able to perform extremely well during the 1972 and 1973 seasons. For the three years that Hicks played in college, he was able to make an appearance in the Rose Bowl and was named into the first team of the All-American selection during the 1972 season and also received All-Big Ten honors. Hicks received All-Conference and All-America honors as well during his senior year. Hicks was able to win the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy as a linesman. Hicks played for the New York Giants all throughout his stay in the NFL. During the 1978 season, Hicks was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers but decided not to play for the team.
