Known as the Flash, John Flaherty is a former Major League Baseball player who became active in 1992 to 2005. As a catcher, he played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Devil Rays ,and New York Yankees. Prior to pursuing a career in professional baseball, Flaherty went to George Washington University. During the 1988 MLB Draft, Flaherty was picked by the Boston Red Sox and stayed in the team's farm system before his debut in the Major League in 1992. He continued playing for the Sox in 1993 before he got traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1994. Flaherty became famous for his 27-game hitting streak in 1996. It was also in that year when he was traded to the San Diego Padres and then to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1997. Flaherty decided to sign with the New York Yankees in 2003 and became a back-up catcher to Jorge Posada. Flaherty's pinch-hit during a 2004 game against the Red Sox which eventually allowed the Yankees to win the match. Flaherty signed back with the Boston Red Sox in December 2005 but decided to retire in 2006. After his retirement, Flaherty signed with the YES Network as a color analyst for the Yankee Broadcasts.
