He was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin and took his college education at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where he also played college football . In 1996, he began pitching for High Single-A Lake Elsinore and then promoted in late season to Triple-A Vancouver. And on June 2, 1998, Washburn made his pro debut for the Angels. On December 2005, Washburn signed a four-year contract with the Seattle Mariners . An on July 2009, Washburn was dealt to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Mauricio Robles and Luke French. He had his final game for the Detroit Tigers on September 15, 2009.
