From the semi-pro ball field located in the coalfields of Dante, Virginia which served as the starting point of his career in baseball, former Major League Baseball pitcher Harry Walter Perkowski worked his way toward fame, playing for the Cincinnati Reds & Redlegs, and the Chicago Cubs from 1947 to 1955. Perkowski was born in September 6, 1922. This 196-lb left-handed batter and pitcher who stands at 6'2.5 also pitched for the Evangeline League under the Natchez Giants in 1943 just prior to his being drafted to the U.S Navy where he left his baseball gear and escorted troops for one year and seven months in the Pacific and the Atlantic. Right after he was discharged from the military service, he signed up with the Cincinnati Reds which he led to victories with his record of 23 wins and 209 strikeouts. Perkowski joined the Texas League's Tulsa Oilers in 1948 leading his team into more triumphs. The following year, e joined the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League. 1950 was a year of reunion for Perkowski with the Cincinnati Reds until 1955. Perkowski's most productive season was noted in 1952. Currently, the 87- year old Perkowski is residing in Beckley, West Virginia.
