Gene Freese was a professional baseball player who became active in 1955 to 1966. The third baseman was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was a right-handed batter and throws using the same hand. Freese was known for playing for a significant number of teams. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros. His professional baseball career took off after he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1955. He had a hitting average of .283 in 1957. He was traded to the Cardinals later that year and then to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1959. He was able to hit 23 homeruns while playing for the Phillies. In 1960, Freese was traded to the White Sox who was then the defending American League champion. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in the next year. He helped the Reds get to its first pennant by hitting 26 homeruns, and posting an 87 RBI after playing 151 games. After suffering from a broken ankle, he made his final MLB appearance with the Houston Astros. Freese played for the minor leagues for two seasons before announcing his retirement in 1968.
