Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnet was catcher in the Major League Baseball. He also served as manager for the Chicago Cubs. Hartnet is regarded by a number of baseball scholars the best catcher during the early part of the century. Hartnet is from Woonsocket, Rhode Island and was raised in Milville, Massachusetts. While in Massachusetts, Hartnet played for the Blackstone Valley League before signing with the Chicago Cubs in 1922. Hartnet was eager to prove his worth and became a great offensive player. During the 1925 season, he was able to hit 24 homers and was ranked second in the league for that. The Cubs was able to win the 1929 pennant but he was only able to play in a few games because of his sore arm. However, he jumped right back in during the 1930 season and came up with a .339 BA, 122 runs batted in and 37 homers. In 1932, Hartnet made history by being the catcher behind the plate during Babe Ruth's Called Shot. Hartnet continued to play with vigor well throughout his 30s. He broke Roy Schalk's MLB record after he was able to play in a total of 1,727 games as a catcher.
