Fred Hoiberg is a retired professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. Hoiberg played with the Minnesota Timberwolves while still in the NBA. After suffering from an enlarged aortic root, Hoiberg decided to retire from playing and decided to work in the front office of the Timberwolves in 2006. However, Hoiberg took over as head basketball coach of Iowa State University, succeeding Greg McDermott, in 2010. Hoiberg was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and went to Ames High School in Ames, Iowa. Hoiberg played football at his old high school where he was the captain and quarterback. Hoiberg led his school's basketball team to the State Championship in 1991 before enrolling in Iowa State University. During the 1995 season, Hoiberg was named into the first team of the All-Big Eight and was an all-around player while in Iowa. During the 1995 NBA draft, Hoiberg was made the 52nd overall selection by the Indiana Pacers where he stayed with for a total of four seasons. After which, Hoiberg decided to played for the Chicago Bulls after he gained free agency. However, it was with the Timberwolves that Hoiberg became popular for his three point shots.
