He is a retired professional baseball player in the Major Leagues who played third base and catcher. He played for baseball teams like the Baltimore Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals. During his early years in the baseball field, he was drafted as a catcher out of Manual Arts High School in 1975. He was selected in the 4th round of the amateur draft by the California Angels . In his Triple A season playing for the Salt Lake City Gulls, he batted .294 with 13 home runs as a third base player in the field. As a professional baseball player, he made his major league debut for the Baltimore Orioles in 1980. He played 8 games in his time with the Orioles though spent most of his year with the Rochester Red Wings. He played on the long side of the longest game in baseball history with the Red Wings in 1981. After a year, he made a decision to go back to the Major League with the Orioles where he hit.132 in 34 games in 1982. Rayford was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals playing the backup third baseman in the season of 1983. Given a second chance, he went back to the Orioles after less than a year then he played as a backup catcher. He made his final major league season in 1987. He also played for a couple of games in the minor league for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons and Batavia Clippers before he retired as a baseball player.
