Ernie Holmes was a professional football player. Throughout his stay in the National Football League, Ernie was called “Fats”. Born in Jamestown, Texas, it was throughout his stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers that Holmes was able to earn his reputation in the NFL as one of the better defensive tackles. While playing for the Steelers, Holmes was one of the players responsible for the Steel Curtain together with Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood and Dwight White. While playing for the Steelers, Holmes was able to play in two successful Super Bowls. Although the statistics are unofficial, according to the Steelers tally Holmes was able to make 40 sacks and is ranked ninth in the all-time list for Steelers sacks. While playing defense for the Steelers, Holmes was an aggressive player and was often feared by other players. Before playing in the NFL, Holmes attended Texas Southern University. During the 1971 NFL Draft, Holmes was selected by the Steelers during the eighth round. After playing for the Steelers, Holmes played for the New England Patriots in the 1978 season. Holmes decided to retire by the end of that season. In all, Holmes was named into two All-Pro selections – in the 1974 and 1975 seasons. Build a game room that will make your friends green with envy.
