Dontrelle Wayne Willis is currently a starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants who bats and throws left-handed. He was born in Oakland, California and went to Encinal High School where he played baseball for 4 years. He was noted for his unconventional pitching style which includes a high leg kick and exaggerated twisting away from the batter. Willis was drafted in the 8th round of the 2000 amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs and signed with the team in 2000. He was traded to the Florida Marlins for Antonio Alfonseca and Matt Clemente in March 27, 2002. As a fruit of his effort, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2003. The team won the 2003 National League Division Series against the San Francisco Giants and played on NL Championship Series proceeding to defeat the New York Yankees in the 2003 World Series. On December 4, 2007, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers for Dallas and signed a 3-year contract with them. In a game against the Chicago White Sox, he injured his left knee and departed the game. He was then traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for starting pitcher Billy Buckner. He was released by the Diamondbacks on July 14, 2010. Currently, Willis has a 71- 62 win- loss record, with a 4.04 earned run average and 830 strikeouts.
