He is often called “Zim” or “Popeye.” He had started his career in 1949 at Campbridge of Eastern Shore League. He has played in Hornell, New York, Elmira, Alabama and St. Paul, Minnesota before he finally made it to the major leagues playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. During the major leagues, he remained with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was in 1958 when he played for the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets in 1962 and Cincinnati Reds. In 1963, he returned to the Dodgers just before he finished his baseball career with the Washington Senators. All throughout his 12 seasons, Zimmer had played 1,095 games where he recorded 773 hits, 91 home runs, 352 runs batted in, 45 stolen bases, and a .235 batting average When he retired from his career, he managed in the minor league and it was on 1971 when he became the third base coach of the Montreal Expos.
