David Lee Wells is a retired Major League Baseball starting pitcher. His nickname is Boomer and was considered to be one of the better southpaw pitchers in the game. He started his professional career as a journeyman for 8 seasons then finally debuted on June 30, 1987 while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays as a reliever. He helped the Blue Jays capture a World Series title but was eventually released and sent to the Detroit Tigers in 1993. With the Tigers he made his first All- Star before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds, and then to the Baltimore Orioles. He entered free agency in 1997 and signed with the New York Yankees. In May 1998, he pitched a perfect game against the Minnesota Twins and almost repeating the feat in a game against the Oakland Athletics. In 1999, he returned to the Blue Jays then was sent to the Chicago White Sox. After suffering back problems, Wells returned to the Yankees in 2003. He then signed with the San Diego Padres in 2004 as a free agent, then to the Boston Red Sox in 2005. He then went back to the Padres in 2006 then to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007. His last game was on September 28, 2007. Though he did not announce his official retirement, he admitted that his career as a player might be over. He then worked as a broadcaster on TBS Sunday Baseball broadcast in 2009.
