Charles Wepner, nicknamed “The Bayonne Bleeder and The Bayonne Brawler,” is a former American professional heavyweight boxer who hails from Bayonne, New Jersey. He was born on February 26, 1939 in New York City, New York. One spots review says that Wepner has frequently been recognized as the inspiration for Rocky Balboa. Wepner made his debut as a professional boxer in 1964 while he was still a member of the United States Marine Corps. However, after losing via knockout to George Foreman and Sonny Liston many boxing analyst thought that his days as a contender were in the brink of collapse. In his next match after Roman, despite dropping to Joe Bugner via third round knockout, Wepner won nine of his next eleven fights, which include victories over Charlie Polite and Ernie Terrell a former WBA Heavyweight champion. Then, in 1975, Wepner challenged Muhammad Ali for the Heavyweight title that ended with decision, with Wepner trailing far behind on the scorecards. Wepner was an orthodox fighter, which to date, had fought fifty one total career matches with thirty five victories and seventeen of them coming by way of knockout, with fourteen defeats and two draws.
