Nicknamed “Cargo”, he was originally part of Arizona Diamondbacks and began playing professionally for Missoula Osprey, a team from the Rookie League. In 2004, he played for Low-Single-A Yakima Bears. That year also, he played 8 games for Single-A South Bend Silver Hawks and made a batting average of .275. Other minor league teams he played for include Silver Hawks, High Single-A Lancaster JetHawks, Tenessee Smokies, Double-A MobileBears, Tucson Sidewinders, among others. Gonzalez made his way to the Major Baseball League on May 30, 2008 for the Oakland Athletics. He was traded to this team together with Brett Anderson, Aaron Cunningham, Greg Smith and Dana Eveland. He recorded his first home run on June 30, 2008 during a game against Florida Marlins. After spending some seasons with the Athletics, he was then traded to Colorado Rockies where he was recognized as a strong player.
