Carl Furillo was a professional baseball player who appeared as an outfielder in the MLB from 1946 to 1960. He was best known for his nicknames “The Reading Rifle” and “Skoonj”. He was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 until his release in 1960. In his first season in the MLB, he had a batting average of .295 and had 88 runs batted in making his ninth in the league's rankings. In 1950, he was able to accomplish a career high of 99 runs. However, the Dodgers still failed to finish first. In 1952, Furillo was named into the All-Star selection. After undergoing surgery to remove his cataracts, he was able to make 21 home runs for the 1953 season. He also posted a batting average of .344. He was named again into the All-Star selection. The Dodgers would finally clinch their first World Series championship in 1955. Furillo registered a. 314 batting average, 95 RBI and 26 home runs. He also played during the 1959 World Series championship where he was the last person to bat before the Dodgers beat out the Milwaukee Braves.
