Bob Hamelin is a retired first baseman for the Major League Baseball. He was born in New Jersey but his family relocated to Irvine, California when he was 12. Hamelin attended Irvine High School where he played not just baseball but also football. He excelled well in the latter sport and even became an Athlete of the Year during his last year in high school. Hamelin first went to Santa Ana College and then to UCLA where he continued to play baseball. In 1988, Hamelin was selected by the Kansas City Royals during round two of the amateur draft. Hamelin signed with the team ten days later. Hamelin was off to a magical rookie season with the Kansas City Royals. After playing for the minor league affiliates of the Royals, Hamelin was called to the MLB in 1993. He was able to play in a total of 16 games for that season but appeared in 101 in the succeeding season. During the 1994 season, Hamelin was able to hit a total of 24 homeruns and registered 64 runs. He was also able to record a .282 BA as well as a .992 fielding %. His rookie year performance allowed him to take home the AL Rookie of the Year Award.
