Known as “Le Capitaine”, Bob Gainey is a retired professional ice hockey player who appeared in the National Hockey League from 1973 to 1989. After his retirement, he served as coach for the Dallas Stars and then as general manager for the Montreal Canadiens, the team that he played for in the NHL. Gainey played for the Petersburgh Petes in the Ontario Hockey League before being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens during the 1973 NHL Draft. He stayed on with the Canadiens up to his retirement in 1989. He was able to play in all five Stanley Cup finals that the Canadiens' was able to clinch—in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1986. Gaines was also able to receive four Frank J. Selke Trophies throughout his entire stay in the NHL as a player. In 1992, Gainey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He is also no. 86th in the 100 Greatest Hockey Players list. While managing the Dallas Stars and the Montreal Canadiens, he was able to lead the Stars to three Stanley Cup finals and winning one title.
