Billy Leo Williams is a retired professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball. He throws right and bats right. Though a talented player, he never played for the World Series with the Chicago Cubs. He started his MLB career with the Chicago Cubs in 1959 and though he suffered from racial discrimination at one point, Williams quickly rose from the minor leagues. His first game with the Cubs was on August 6, 1959 against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1961 he won the Rookie of the Year award and set a National League record for consecutive games played. His batting stroke was efficient and he hit for both power and average in spite of his slender frame. His best season was in 1972 when he set a .606 slugging average and led the league with a .333 batting average. He was then traded to the Oakland Athletics and helped the team in the 1975 American League West championships against the Boston Red Sox. A year later, Williams declared his retirement. According to his autobiography, Williams is thankful to his grade school teacher for encouraging him to do his best. He was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987. He has a record of .290 batting average, 426 home runs, 2, 711 hits, and 1, 475 runs batted in for his entire career.
