Athea Gibson was a professional tennis player. She made history by being the first colored woman to play professional tennis and to win a Grand Slam title. With such accomplishment, she is often called as “the Jackie Robinson of tennis”. She was born in Silver, South Carolina. After retiring from amateur tennis, Gibson went on to play in exhibition tours which are the only form of tours open to women during her time. She was able to land the top spot during the 1957 and 1958 rankings. Gibson was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1971. Gibson was able to win five Grand Slam titles, two runner-up finishes, six women's doubles, and five runner-up finishes for women's doubles. Her first Grand Slam title came after she defeated UK's Angela Mortimer Barrett in the French Championships with a 6-0, 12-0 score in 1956. She also took two Wimbledon wins; the first was against Darlene Hard in 1957 and Angela Mortimer Barrett in 1958. Gibson likewise won two US Championships; in 1957 against Louise Brough Clapp and in 1958 against Darlene Hard.
