But after playing in the Venezuelan Summer League for two seasons, he suffered an elbow injury that hindered him to play in the entire 2003 season. In 2004, he came back to the mound making his debut on American soil. He was considered one of Boston's top pitching prospects after accomplishing 15 starts and 1.77 ERA. It was in 2005 when he posted a 6-1 record with 2.40 ERA where he was selected for the All-Star Futures Game making the Carolina League All-Star team. He was then promoted to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. He was one of the youngest players in his league. At the end of that season, he was traded to the Florida Marlins. Sanchez had his first 15 starts with Mudcats in 2006. He posted a 3-6 record with 3.15 ERA. He also pitched two complete games with Carolina. In September 2006, he threw a no-hitter for the Florida Marlins. He walked four batters, struck out six, and threw 103 pitches.
