Alexander Murray Hannum, known as Alex Hannum was a retired National Basketball Player who was also a coach of a few NBA teams. He was a former basketball player in Hamilton High School and in University of Southern California. He joined the National Basketball Association in 1949 and stayed in the league until 1957. As a player, he is known to be one of the two NBA players to have more than six personal fouls in only one game. He posted a career record of 3078 points and 2013 rebounds with 857 assists. After his playing period, he started coaching NBA teams like the Philadelphia 76ers who reached the 1966-1977 NBA Championship.. He also coached St. Louis Hawks and led them to the 1958 NBA Finals in a win over the Boston Celtics and he became one of three coaches in NBA to have two championships in different teams. Because of his excellent performance as a coach, he was given the 1964 Coach of the Year award. Hannum also coached for America Basketball Association teams like the Oakland Oaks which he joined in 1968. Like what he always did, he helped the Oaks reach the ABA Championships. He was one of the coaches to have championships in both NBA and ABA. Hannum likewise received ABA Coach of the Year award. Hannum was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998 and died on January 18, 2002 at the age of 78.
